Ultimately. . . we don't need to be the last three standing. But if they don't trust us to revive the dead, then they better damn well make sure they have someone else in mind for the job.

It's like what Girge said. Even if abandon our plans, if anyone else kills, we're going to be blamed for it.

[ he meant a more general sense of the word dead. as in, they are all going to be dead, because everyone is going to fuck this up. ]

I didn't have any expectations, but I did this job hoping I'd at least live until the end.

Me too, Kaito. It's up to them now though, and we can only hope they make the right choice.

[he says that with absolute firmness]

If I make it to the end I'll still take the deal.

[ he's just a lot less sure about his chances of getting to the final three now. ]

[ besides the people in this room, he means. ]

[he. . . has to stop to think about this, honestly. Andersen said he would, but Andersen said a lot of things that Kaito no longer believes]

I dunno.

[he says with a small shake of his head]

Percival? He seems like the type. Hajime. . .?

I think I could see Percival doing it. I don't know Hajime well enough to say for sure.

[ she did his eyebrows. ]

There are too many people that I've barely spoken to.

[ since they never really made him want to talk to them. ]

. . . too many people none of us trust.

[Andersen can say what he wants, Jake and Dirk and the twins can yell all they want, but in the end?]

[forty-two lives were too important for the Hunters to risk so easily by just telling everyone about what was going on]

I can understand their anger, but it's easy for them to condemn us when they haven't been in our shoes. Before you came here, Kaito, do you think you would have ever made a choice like this?

[he stuffs his hand into his pocket and slumps against the wall again]

[ he nods his head. ]

That's exactly my point. No one knows what they would do in a situation until that situation actually happens. They can claim that they definitely know, but that's a lie. So everyone else, right now, is the you from before who was never forced to make this choice.

[ he doesn't answer right away, but when he does, his voice is quiet. ]

Where I'm from, there are two humanoid races. The Ferines, who are people of the water, and the Orerines, who are people of land. There has been a lot of hostility between the two that I won't get too much into, but... it caused a lot of resentment that ultimately lead to enormous problems for us all. The Ferines have a messiah like figure, known as the Merines, that gets reborn after a Ferines manages to complete a certain Rite. A young girl named Shirley became the Merines, but she hadn't really awakened to her powers yet.

[ there's a point to this story, hold on. ]

A group of Ferines who hated Orerines manipulated her into waking up to them, and got her to believe that she needed to destroy all land. Shirley became immensely powerful, and it got to the point where there didn't seem to be any option other than to kill her. I was the one who brought up the suggestion, since no one else wanted to. [ he knows they had to be thinking it though. ] They weren't very happy with me after that.

[he listens quietly, eyes slipping shut again. and when he speaks, it's low, barely audible]
